Mother of the Bride Speech Examples

You may not be expected to speak, but many mothers want to. Here is how to say what you feel in under three minutes, with two full examples.

For a long time, the mother of the bride was expected to stay quiet at the reception. That has changed. More and more mothers stand up, and guests are glad when they do.

If you are thinking about speaking, begin with a question. What do you want your daughter to remember about this moment? Not what to say about her whole life, only what you want her to carry away. That one idea will shape the whole speech.

You can be funny, sentimental or both. You can speak alone, or with the father of the bride. You can read from a card. What matters is that the words are true and the speech is short enough that you enjoy it.

The two examples below show two different voices: one gentle and sentimental, one warm and lightly funny. Both use invented names. Take what suits you and change the rest. If you are also looking at the other parent's side, see the father of the bride speech page.

How to structure a mother of the bride speech

Six parts that add up to roughly two to three minutes.

  1. Welcome and thanks. Greet your guests and thank them for being there. Mention the other family warmly. About 20 seconds, or 40 words.
  2. Say who you are. Keep it simple: "I'm Diane, Megan's mom." Then add one line about how it feels to be standing there. About 10 seconds.
  3. A memory of your daughter. One small scene from her growing up that shows her heart. Describe what you saw, not what you thought. About 45 seconds, or 100 words.
  4. What you see in her now. Name two qualities you admire in her as an adult. Two sentences are enough. About 25 seconds.
  5. Welcome her partner. Say something specific you have noticed about how they treat her, and say you are glad they are part of the family. About 30 seconds.
  6. A wish and the toast. Share one wish for the marriage and then invite everyone to raise a glass. Under 20 seconds in all.

Gentle, sentimental mother of the bride speech (2 to 3 minutes)

Sentimental · 2 to 3 minutes · about 264 words

Suits: A mother who wants a memory-led, emotional toast.

Good evening, everyone. I'm Diane, Megan's mom. Thank you for coming, and a special welcome to Chris's family. We feel lucky to be sharing today with you.

I've been thinking about what to say for weeks, and I kept returning to a small moment. Megan was about six, and she had made me a card. It was crooked and the glitter was everywhere, and on the front she had written, "You are my favorite person." I kept that card in a drawer for years. I think she knew then what she has always known. That love is best when you say it out loud.

Somewhere along the way, that little girl became a woman who tells the people around her they matter. She is warm. She is brave. She notices when someone is sitting alone. I've been proud of her for a very long time, and today my heart is very full.

Chris, you came into our lives quietly, and you've already made yourself at home. You look at Megan as if she is the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you want to lose. Thank you for that. We are so glad you're ours now. You've already shown that you know how to care for her.

Megan, my wish for you is simple. Keep saying the love out loud. Write the crooked card, say the plain words, and never wait for a better moment. I'll be here, as proud as ever, holding the glitter.

Everyone, please raise a glass. To Megan and Chris. We love you both. Cheers.

A small object, the card, carries the whole speech and reappears in the wish. Replace it with one real keepsake or moment from your own daughter's childhood.

Warm and lightly funny mother of the bride speech (2 to 3 minutes)

Funny · 2 to 3 minutes · about 272 words

Suits: A mother who wants a light, relaxed speech with a sincere finish.

Hello, everyone. I'm Alicia, Sofia's mother. Her father told me I should keep this short. I told him I've been waiting twenty-eight years for this microphone.

Don't worry, I won't use it all. I'll just say that being a mother is mostly the art of worrying quietly. You pack the lunch, you tell the story, you pretend not to be nervous. Then one day your daughter stands up and says, "Mom, I've found him," and all those years of worry turn into something else. Joy, mostly. With a small side of panic about the seating plan.

Sofia has always been the sort of person who gets things done. When she decides something, she decides it all the way. I've learned never to argue with that look. She is clever, and she is kind, and she can organize a room full of people without raising her voice. I'm not sure where she got it from. I'd like to take some of the credit.

Will, thank you for being exactly who you are. You are calm when she is busy. You are funny when she is tired. You make her feel like the best version of herself. I could not have asked for a better match for my daughter. Everyone in this room can see it, and so can her father, who has not stopped smiling.

My wish for you both is plenty of laughter and a little patience. Take turns being the one in charge. Let the other one win now and then.

Please stand and raise a glass. To Sofia and Will. May your marriage be as joyful as this evening. Cheers.

Gentle jokes about worry and planning keep the tone light, and the sincere turn arrives at the praise for the partner. Replace the "organize a room" line with a real strength of your daughter.

Questions

Does the mother of the bride give a speech?

She can. It isn't required, but many mothers speak, alone or with the father of the bride. A short, sincere speech is welcome at almost every modern wedding.

How long should it be?

Two to three minutes is about right, which is 260 to 390 words. If there are many speakers, one to two minutes is fine. Short, warm and clear always works.

What should I say about the groom?

Say one specific thing you have noticed about how he treats your daughter, and tell him you're glad he is joining the family. Keep it simple and sincere.

What if I get too emotional to finish?

Pause, breathe and look at your notes. Guests are with you. Keep your toast line short so it is easy to finish, even when your voice shakes.

Can I speak together with my husband?

Yes. Many couples split the speech, one telling the memory and the other giving the wish and toast. Rehearse the handoff so it feels smooth.
